We Deserve a Better System
Our Canadian Parliamentary system is largely based on the British system that has been in effect since 1707. I am quite sure that those wealthy white men who created this system long ago would have one look at our modern world and come up with a much different system. After they recovered from the shock of poor people, women, and people of colour being allowed to vote, and even run for office, of course.
Our party system is not true democracy as far as I am concerned. I think we should be voting for candidates who have no party affiliation. Let the strongest and most popular candidate win in each riding, without the thought of some overriding party. Then I would like to see those newly elected independent members of the legislature or parliament vote amongst themselves for who should be the leader of themselves, and subsequently us. The strongest of the strong. The brightest of the bright.
This fantastical system of my imagination will probably never exist anywhere except in my little mind. However we should be looking to create a more sensible and democratic system. We are stuck with a party system I realize for the forseeable future. But we could enact some pretty radical reforms quickly.
Mostly I am talking about allowing more voting inside the legislature or parliament to be a secret vote. I find it appalling that a member of a party has to vote in line with the party's directive or face expulsion from their caucus. The secret ballots can be revealed at a later date so the electorate, us citizens, can later determine if we approve of the way our elected representatives conducted themselves while in session, before we decide if they deserve to be re-elected.
I don't claim to be an expert in this field and I am sure most so-called experts would tell me how wrong I am. But I think we should come up with a better system than we currently have. Our current parties insist that everything they do or say is good and everything the other parties do or say is bad. Watching them in action while in session is like watching a bunch of petulant children. Banging on their desks shouting, "Here! Here!", or actually shoulting childish insults across the isle.
You can start now by showing some support for myself and my ideas. Tell your friend, and tell them to tell another one thousand people. And then maybe we all will get somewhere. Fantastical.
